Where does Valentine's Day come from?
The origin of Valentine's Day is not entirely clear, and there are several theories about the origins of this romantic holiday. One of the most popular theories traces Valentine's Day back to the Christian martyr Valentine of Terni.
Valentine is said to have been a priest in the Roman Empire who lived under Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. According to tradition, he married lovers despite the emperor's prohibition. Claudius II believed that unmarried men made better soldiers and therefore banned the marriage of young men. Valentin is said to have secretly married couples, which ultimately cost him his life. He was executed on February 14, around the year 269 AD.
Legend also says that in prison, Valentine helped a blind girl, the daughter of his prison guard, gain sight. Before his execution, he is said to have sent her a farewell letter signed "Your Valentine", which is considered to be the origin of Valentine's greetings.
Valentine's Day has evolved over the centuries into a day of love and affection. In the 14th century, February 14th was established as lovers' day in English and French tradition. During this time, the tradition of giving flowers, especially red roses, as a sign of love arose.
Nowadays, Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide as a day of love and affection, and couples use it to express their love and exchange romantic gestures.
