History of the Zurich Children's Hospital

Due to space constraints at the old Children’s Hospital in Zurich-Hottingen, the foundation planned a new building in the Zurich-Lengg district. In early 2009, the Zurich Cantonal Government set the course for this project and secured land in an area between Balgrist University Hospital and the Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich. The canton provided the foundation with land for the new construction in exchange for the land of the existing children’s hospital in Hottingen.

The architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron was awarded the contract for the design, and construction began in 2018. The new building, which includes an acute care hospital and a facility for research and teaching, was partly funded by donations and inaugurated in October 2024. Following the opening, a carefully coordinated transfer moved patients from Hottingen to the new site in Zurich-Lengg, with nearly a thousand people from various fields involved in the complex operation.

The architecture of the new facility is tailored to the needs of young patients. Inpatient and outpatient areas are now closer together, reducing distances and streamlining processes. Patient rooms are homely and child-friendly, allowing one parent to stay overnight with their child. Over 200 rooms feature slightly slanted wooden ceilings that evoke the feel of a treehouse or cozy cabin, adding warmth to the atmosphere. Green inner courtyards provide daylight throughout the hospital, while operating rooms are equipped with natural light and variable color lighting to create a calming environment. The therapy station on the lower floor has direct access to a garden.

An additional building is dedicated to research, teaching, and the training of doctors and nursing staff. As the first hospital in Switzerland, both the hospital and the research and teaching building received the platinum certification from the Swiss Society for Sustainable Real Estate Management. The future use of the Hottingen site will be determined by the Zurich Cantonal Government.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the patient is still in the hospital at the time of delivery so that we can deliver the flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive flowers until they have been assigned a room.
