Origin:
Thistles (Echinops) are native to Europe, Asia, Africa and America and come in different species and varieties.
Growth:
Thistles have an upright habit and, depending on the species and variety, can reach a height of 30 cm to over 2 meters. They often have spiny stems and leaves.
Leaves:
The leaves of thistles are often large, toothed and spiny. They can be different shades of green depending on the species and variety and are often covered with fine hairs.
Blossom:
Thistles produce showy inflorescences surrounded by spiny bracts. The flowers can be a variety of colors including purple, blue, pink, red and white. The flowering period varies depending on the species and variety, but is often in summer and autumn
Location:
Thistles grow best in a sunny location with well-drained soil. They are relatively undemanding and can grow in a variety of soil types as long as the soil is not too wet. However, some species are invasive and can spread aggressively, so it is important to keep them in check.
Care:
Thistles require little care and are often very resistant to drought and adverse conditions. They can be watered occasionally, especially during dry periods, but they should not be overwatered. Some species can reproduce by seed and can be invasive, so it is important to remove spent inflorescences to reduce seed production and control spread.
