Origin:
Sunflowers originally come from North America and were cultivated as a crop by indigenous peoples. They belong to the Asteraceae family.
Growth:
Sunflowers are annual plants with a strong, upright habit. They can reach impressive heights of 1.5 to 3 meters or more depending on the variety. The stem is often hairy and sturdy to support the weight of the large flower heads.
Leaves:
The leaves of the sunflower are large, heart-shaped and have a rough, hairy surface. They are arranged alternately on the stem and have jagged edges.
Blossom:
The sunflower flower heads are very showy and consist of numerous small tubular flowers surrounded by bright yellow ray florets. The flower heads can reach diameters of 10 to 30 cm or more. Sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning the flower heads rotate toward the sun during the day, a phenomenon known as phototropism.
Location:
Sunflowers prefer a full sun location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They grow best in temperate climates and require a location protected from strong winds to prevent the tall stems from snapping.
Care:
Sunflowers are relatively easy to care for. They require regular watering, especially during the growing season and in dry conditions. Occasional fertilization with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer can support growth. Sunflowers are susceptible to some pests and diseases such as aphids and powdery mildew, so the plants should be checked regularly. It can be helpful to support the plants or plant them in groups to give them extra support.
