Origin:

The Christmas rose, also known as the snow rose, belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) and is native to the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe. It grows wild in calcareous soils and is particularly widespread in the Alps and the Apennines.

Growth:

The Christmas rose is a perennial, evergreen shrub that reaches a height of around 10 to 30 cm. It grows slowly and forms dense, compact clumps over time. The plant has strong, thick rhizomes from which new shoots sprout every year.

Leaves:

The leaves of the Christmas rose are leathery, dark green and palmately divided into seven to nine segments. They have long stems and remain on the plant all year round, making it attractive even in winter.

Blossom:

The Christmas rose blooms in winter, usually from December to March. The flowers are strikingly large, 5 to 8 cm in diameter, and usually have five white or slightly pink petals that can turn pink in cold weather. In the center of the flower there are numerous yellow stamens.

Location:

Christmas roses prefer a semi-shady to shady location, ideally under deciduous trees that provide sufficient shade in summer. They thrive best in humus-rich, well-drained, calcareous soil that should be evenly moist but not wet.

Care:

Christmas roses are relatively easy to care for. Regular watering is important, especially in dry periods, to maintain soil moisture. A layer of mulch made from leaves or compost can help retain moisture and improve soil structure. You should fertilize in spring with an organic fertilizer. Wilted flowers and old leaves should be removed to keep the plant healthy and avoid fungal diseases. The plant is hardy but requires winter protection during periods of extreme cold, especially when grown in pots.
