Origin:
The calla lily (Zantedeschia) is native to the wetlands of South Africa, although it is now grown in many temperate regions around the world.
Growth:
Callas grow from tuberous roots and form an upright, stemless plant with long leaves and showy inflorescences. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, they can grow between 30 cm and 90 cm high.
Leaves:
The leaves of the calla are large, heart-shaped and shiny. They grow from the ground in the shape of a rosette and form an attractive base for the flowers.
Blossom:
Calla flowers are showy and trumpet-shaped with a distinctive shape. They come in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, pink, orange and red. The flowering period usually extends from spring to summer, although some varieties can also bloom in the fall.
Location:
Callas prefer a partially shaded to sunny location with well-drained soil. They thrive best in humus-rich soil that is moist but not wet. They can be grown in garden beds as well as in pots or containers.
Care:
Callas require regular watering, especially during the growth and flowering periods. Waterlogging should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. After flowering, the dried inflorescences can be removed and the plant can be kept a little drier during the dormant period in autumn and winter. Callas can also be propagated by dividing the tubers to obtain new plants.
