Origin:
Columbine (Aquilegia) is native to Europe, North America and parts of Asia.
Growth:
Columbines have an upright or slightly overhanging habit and, depending on the variety, reach a height of around 30 to 90 centimeters.
Leaves:
The leaves of the Columbine are mostly palmate and can vary depending on the species. They are often blue-green or gray-green and can provide a decorative touch in the garden even when the plant is not in bloom.
Blossom:
The flowers of the columbine are striking and characteristic for their bell-shaped structure with downward-hanging spurs. They come in a variety of colors including blue, purple, pink, red, yellow and white.
Location:
Columbines prefer partially shaded to sunny locations with permeable, humus-rich soil. They grow well under trees, in borders or rock gardens.
Care:
Columbines require little care. They should be watered regularly, especially in dry conditions. Annual pruning after flowering promotes growth and shape. To promote flowering and keep the plant healthy, it is advisable to remove dead flowers. In the spring, organic fertilizers or compost can be applied to the soil around the plants to support growth.
