History of the Visp Hospital

In 1926, at the request of the church authorities and the community of Visp, the St. Ursula Monastery began building an industrial and home economics school. The monastery's missionary work required women missionaries who were well trained in nursing. For this reason, the school was converted into a modest private clinic and nursing school in 1934. Two years later, at the request of a newly formed interest group, “District Hospital Sta Maria, Visp” was entered into the commercial register as a charitable association.

In 1941, the Ursuline community and the supervisory board of the new association signed a purchase agreement, with the monastery remaining co-owner and foundation of the hospital. Due to years of annoying lack of space and beds, several renovations and new buildings had to be realized.

The first large extension building was inaugurated in 1953. In 1964, the new nursing school was attached to the school hospital in the south. An assistant and a chief physician's house were also built. In 1966, preparations for the new west building began. The construction program for the first stage included, among other things, rooms for civil defense and disaster relief, an entrance hall, laundry room, emergency room, operating rooms and bed wards.

The new building was put into operation in 1973. In a second stage between 1981 and 1990, the new east building and the renovation of the middle wing from 1953 were planned and realized.

Until the end of 2003, the regional hospital Sta Maria, Visp / west of Raron / Leuk was an association based in Visp. Members of the association were the communities in the Visp, western Raron and Leuk districts as well as some natural and legal persons. From January 1, 2004, the Visp Hospital was integrated into the Upper Valais Hospital Center as part of the Valais Health Network.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the Patient is still in the Hospital at the Time of Delivery so that we can deliver the Flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive Flowers until they have been assigned a Room.
