History of the Balgrist University Hospital Zurich

The Balgrist University Hospital developed from the “Balgrist Institution” founded in 1912. Its mission was to treat, look after, train and integrate physically disabled children into working life. Today, as then, the Balgrist University Hospital is supported by the Swiss Balgrist Association, which was founded in 1909. The demands on the clinic became increasingly complex. In 1945 it received the status of Zurich Orthopedic University Hospital. In 1990, the third Swiss Paraplegic Center was able to begin operations in a spacious building complex specially built for this purpose. In order to be able to cope with the diverse tasks and to finance them, we rely on sponsors. We would like to thank our sponsors for their active support.

A total renovation will take place: an interdisciplinary research wing will be put into operation in the old building2. In the final project stage, the newly structured dormitory and administration moved into the old building 1 in 1996. Christian Gerber (*1952) is appointed clinic director and orthopedic chief physician. He led the Balgrist for the following 22 years.

Spinal surgeon Mazda Farshad (*1982) is appointed full professor of orthopedics and medical director of the hospital. He is co-founder of the Department of Clinical and Applied Research and the University Spine Center. His drive for innovation and quality standards advance Balgrist University Hospital as a leading orthopedic clinic.

Today, Balgrist University Hospital is led by a medical hospital director, Mazda Farshad, and an operational hospital director, Thomas Huggler. The focus of all our activities is our patients and the fulfillment of our orders as a university tertiary care provider in the treatment of the most complex cases.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the patient is still in the hospital at the time of delivery so that we can deliver the flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive flowers until they have been assigned a room.
