Origin:
Zinnias belong to the Asteraceae family and are native to the warm regions of Mexico and the southern part of the United States.
Growth:
Zinnias are annual plants that can grow between 15 cm and 1 meter high, depending on the variety. They have an upright habit with branched stems. The plants grow quickly and bloom profusely.
Leaves:
The leaves of zinnias are simple, ovate to lanceolate and arranged oppositely. They are green, rough and sometimes slightly hairy. The leaves sit directly on the stem (unbranched petioles).
Blossom:
Zinnias are known for their showy, colorful flowers. The flower heads vary in size, from small flowers 5 cm in diameter to large flowers over 15 cm in diameter. Colors span a wide range including white, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple and multi-colored variations. The flowering period extends from summer to the first frost.
Location:
Zinnias prefer a full sun location and well-drained soil. They thrive best in humus-rich, moderately moist soil. They are heat tolerant and prefer warm growing conditions.
Care:
Zinnias are relatively easy to care for. They require regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist without causing waterlogging. Mulching can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. To promote continuous flowering, wilted flowers should be removed regularly (deadheading). Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer every four to six weeks supports growth and flower formation. Zinnias can be susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions, so good air circulation is important.
