Origin:
Whiteweed, also known as liver balm, belongs to the Asteraceae family and comes from the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, especially Mexico.
Growth:
Whiteweed is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant that can reach a height of about 15 to 60 cm. The plants have a bushy, compact habit and are known for their dense, fluffy flowers.
Leaves:
The leaves of Whiteweed are heart-shaped to egg-shaped, green and slightly hairy. They are arranged opposite each other on the stem and have a toothed or wavy leaf edge.
Blossom:
Whiteweed is known for its small, fluffy flower heads that appear in dense umbels. Flower color varies and can be blue, purple, pink or white. The flowering period extends from early summer to the first frost, making Ageratum a long-lasting, flowering plant.
Location:
Whiteweed prefers a location in full sun to partial shade. It grows best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. The plant is heat tolerant but sensitive to frost and should therefore be planted outdoors after the last frost.
Care:
Whiteweed is relatively easy to care for. The plants require regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist without causing waterlogging. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture. During the growing season, regular fertilization with a balanced fertilizer is advisable. Spent flowers should be removed regularly (deadheading) to extend the flowering period and keep the plant healthy. Ageratum can be susceptible to aphids and mildew, so plants should be checked regularly for pests and diseases.
