Origin:
Wax flowers belong to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and are mainly native to Australia. They grow naturally in the dry and sandy soils of southwestern Australia.
Growth:
Waxflowers are evergreen shrubs that can reach a height of 0.5 to 4 meters, depending on the species. They have a bushy, branched habit and are known for their long lifespan and resilience.
Leaves:
The leaves of waxflowers are narrow, needle-like and aromatic, often with a slightly spicy scent. They are dark green and give the plant a fine, almost herbaceous appearance.
Blossom:
The flowers of the wax flowers are small, cup-shaped and grow in clusters at the ends of the branches. They are waxy, which gives them their name, and come in a variety of colors including white, pink, purple and red. The flowering period ranges from late winter to spring. The flowers are very durable and popular in floristry as cut flowers.
Location:
Waxflowers prefer a full sun location with well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil. They are drought adapted and do not require moist soil, but can thrive in well-drained soil. A slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal.
Care:
Wax flowers are relatively easy to care for. They require little water and are drought tolerant, but should be watered occasionally during extended dry periods. Once established, they require little care. Light pruning after flowering can help keep the plant in shape and promote growth. They are frost sensitive and should be grown in frost-free regions or protected during the winter in cold climates.
