Origin:
The maiden in the green (Nigella) originally comes from the Mediterranean region, but is now widespread in many parts of the world. It is an annual plant and belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae).
Growth:
The maiden in the green grows upright and produces delicate, fern-like leaves that alternate along the stems. It reaches a height of around 30 to 60 centimeters.
Leaves:
The leaves of the maiden in the green are finely pinnate and have a delicate, filigree texture. They are deeply cut and give the plant an attractive, fern-like appearance.
Blossom:
The flowers of the maiden in the green are star-shaped and come in a variety of colors, including blue, pink, white and purple. They are located at the tips of the stems and are surrounded by a characteristic wreath of fine, green leaves.
Location:
The maiden in the green thrives best in sunny to partially shaded locations with well-drained soil. It is a relatively undemanding plant and can grow in various soil types.
Care:
The maiden in the green requires little care. It prefers moderate watering and tolerates drought well. Wilted inflorescences can be removed. After the flowering period, the seeds can be collected and resown the next year to propagate the plants.
