Origin:

Veronica, known as speedwell, is a genus of flowering plants that belongs to the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). The species are distributed in temperate regions worldwide, particularly in Europe, Asia and North America.

Growth:

Veronica species vary greatly in their growth habit. They can occur as annual or perennial herbs as well as small shrubs. Height ranges from low-growing ground covers to upright plants that can grow from 10 cm to over 1 meter tall. Many Veronica species form dense mats or cushions.

Leaves:

Veronica's leaves are simple and usually opposite. They are often lanceolate or ovoid, but can also vary depending on the species. The leaves are usually green and can have different textures and sizes depending on the variety.

Blossom:

Veronica is known for its slender, upright inflorescences consisting of many small, tubular or bell-shaped flowers. The flowers are usually blue, purple, white or pink and bloom from late spring to fall. The inflorescences can be racemose or spike-shaped and attract many pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Location:

Veronica prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They are adaptable and can thrive in a variety of soil types as long as drainage is good. Some species are particularly drought-resistant, while others prefer wetter soils.

Care:

Veronica is relatively easy to care for. It requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist, but waterlogging should be avoided. Annual fertilization with a balanced fertilizer can promote growth and flower formation. Pruning after flowering can keep the plant compact and encourage a second bloom. Some species can become invasive, so it is important to keep them under control.
