Origin:
Trachelium, also known as neckwort, belongs to the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). The plant comes from the Mediterranean region, particularly regions such as southern Europe and North Africa.
Growth:
Trachelium is a perennial, herbaceous plant often grown as an annual in colder climates. It reaches a height of 30 to 90 cm and has a bushy, upright habit. The stems are stable and branch well.
Leaves:
The leaves of the Trachelium are lanceolate to ovate, dark green and slightly toothed. They are arranged alternately and give the plant full, dense foliage.
Blossom:
Trachelium is known for its showy, umbel-like inflorescences, which consist of many small, star-shaped flowers. The flowers come in a variety of colors including purple, blue, white and pink. The flowering period extends from June to September. Not only are the flowers attractive, but they also attract bees and butterflies.
Location:
Trachelium prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. The plant thrives in temperate climates and should be protected from strong winds to prevent the stems from snapping.
Care:
Trachelium is relatively easy to care for. It requires regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist without causing waterlogging. Regular fertilization during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer promotes flower formation and the health of the plant. After flowering, light pruning can help keep the plant compact and extend the flowering period. In regions with mild winters, Trachelium can overwinter as a perennial plant, while in colder regions it may require shelter or transplanting to a frost-free area.
