Origin:
Statice, also known as sea lavender, belongs to the Plumbaginaceae family. The plants are native to temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, Asia and Africa, often in coastal and salt marsh areas.
Growth:
Statice are perennial, sometimes annual, herbaceous plants that can reach a height of 30 to 90 cm. They form dense rosettes of basal leaves from which leafless flower stalks grow.
Leaves:
The leaves of the Statice are long, narrow, lanceolate and form a dense basal rosette. They are usually leathery and can be smooth or slightly hairy depending on the species. The leaves stay close to the ground and help stabilize the plant.
Blossom:
The flowers of Statice are small, papery and arranged in dense, panicle-like inflorescences. They come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, pink, purple and blue. The flowering period extends from summer to autumn (June to October). The long-lasting flowers make Statice particularly popular as cut and dried flowers.
Location:
Statice prefer a sunny location and thrive best in well-drained, sandy to loamy soil. They are salt tolerant, making them well suited to coastal gardens. The plants prefer dry soils and are very heat and drought tolerant.
Care:
Statice are easy to care for and require little attention. They should be planted in well-drained soil to avoid waterlogging. Occasional watering during long dry periods is sufficient as the plants are very drought tolerant. Statice require little to no fertilizer as they thrive in nutrient-poor soils. Removing spent inflorescences can improve the appearance of the plant and extend the flowering period. Statice are largely resistant to pests and diseases.
