Origin:
Spray carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) belong to the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) and originally come from the Mediterranean region. They have been cultivated in many parts of the world and are particularly popular in floristry.
Growth:
Spray carnations are perennial, herbaceous plants with an upright habit. They form numerous branched stems that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. These stems bear multiple flowers that grow in clusters, which gives them their name.
Leaves:
The leaves of the spray carnations are narrow, lanceolate and have a gray-green to blue-green color. They are arranged oppositely and give the plant a fine, elegant appearance.
Blossom:
Spray carnations are known for their attractive, fragrant flowers that come in a variety of colors such as white, pink, red and purple. Each flower has five petals with jagged edges. The flowering period extends from late spring to autumn, depending on the variety and climate.
Location:
Spray carnations prefer a sunny location with well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. They thrive in temperate climates and require a location protected from strong winds.
Care:
Spray carnations are relatively easy to care for, but require regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist without causing waterlogging. Well-drained soil is important to prevent root rot. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage the plant to produce new flowers and improve its appearance. Once a year, preferably in spring, the plant should be provided with a balanced fertilizer. Light protection from severe frost is recommended in winter, especially in colder climates.
