Origin:
Skimmia is a genus of evergreen shrubs that belong to the Rutaceae family. They are native to East Asia, including Japan, China and the Himalayas.
Growth:
Skimmia are compact, rounded shrubs that typically reach a height and width of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. They grow slowly and have a dense, bushy shape.
Leaves:
The leaves of Skimmia are leathery, elliptical and shiny dark green. They are whole and have a slightly aromatic quality when ground.
Blossom:
Skimmia produces small, star-shaped flowers arranged in dense, upright panicles. The flowers appear in spring and are usually white or cream colored, sometimes slightly pink. Some varieties smell pleasant. After flowering, female plants produce bright red berries, provided there is a male plant nearby for pollination.
Location:
Skimmia prefers a partially shaded to shady location with acidic to neutral, humus-rich and well-drained soil. They will also tolerate full sun if the soil is kept sufficiently moist, however the leaves may brown in the intense sun.
Care:
Skimmia is easy to care for and requires minimal care. It should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist but not wet. Annual pruning after flowering can help maintain shape and encourage growth. A mulch layer of bark mulch or compost helps to retain moisture in the soil and protect the roots. Since Skimmia prefers acidic soils, an occasional application of acidic fertilizer or compost can be helpful.
