Origin:
Peonies (Paeonia) are perennial plants that belong to the peony family (Paeoniaceae). They are native to Eurasia, particularly China, Japan and Europe.
Growth:
Peonies are herbaceous plants with strong, upright stems. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, they can reach heights of 60 cm to over 1 meter.
Leaves:
The leaves of peonies are dark green, shiny and deeply lobed. They grow in an attractive rosette shape along the stems and persist even after the flowers have faded.
Blossom:
The flowers of peonies are large, showy and fragrant. They can come in a variety of colors such as white, pink, red and yellow and appear in spring to summer depending on the variety.
Location:
Peonies prefer a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil. They thrive best in temperate climates and require adequate space for their root system.
Care:
Peonies require regular watering throughout the growing season, especially during dry periods. Once established, they are relatively easy to care for, requiring only occasional fertilizing and thinning to promote good air circulation. Spent stems should be cut back after flowering to encourage new shoots to grow.
