Origin:
Nerines are native to South Africa and belong to the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). They grow wild in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
Growth:
Nerines produce slender, upright stems that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. They bear narrow, grass-like leaves that often grow in spring and die back in summer before flowers appear.
Leaves:
The leaves of Nerine are linear and grass-like with a light, green hue. They grow in a basal rosette and can be up to one meter long.
Blossom:
Nerine flowers are showy and trumpet-shaped with narrow petals that open into a star-shaped flower head. They appear in the fall in bright colors such as pink, red, orange and white.
Location:
Nerines prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They thrive in temperate climates and are hardy to certain temperatures. In regions with cold winters, they can be grown in pots and moved to sheltered areas.
Care:
Nerines require regular watering as they grow, especially during dry periods in summer. After the flowering period, the leaves should not be removed, but should die back naturally to strengthen the bulbs for the next season. It is important to keep the bulbs dry to prevent rot. Nerines should be dug up, divided and replanted every few years to ensure good flower production.
