Origin:
Marigold, also known as garden marigold or calendula, belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae). It originally comes from southern Europe and North Africa, but is now widespread in many parts of the world as an ornamental and medicinal plant.
Growth:
Marigold is an annual, herbaceous plant that can reach a height of 30 to 60 cm. It has an upright, branched habit and forms dense clumps. The stems are slightly hairy.
Leaves:
The leaves of the marigold are elongated to lanceolate, green and slightly hairy. They are arranged alternately and have smooth or slightly toothed edges.
Blossom:
The flowers of the marigold are radial and consist of numerous ray florets, which are often darker in color in the middle. Flower colors range from bright yellow to deep orange. The flowering period extends from early summer to autumn (June to October). The flowers have a slightly spicy scent and are edible.
Location:
Marigolds prefer a sunny location, but can also tolerate partial shade. They thrive best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. The plants are relatively undemanding and adaptable.
Care:
Marigolds are easy to care for and require little attention. They should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods, but waterlogging should be avoided. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Marigolds benefit from occasional feeding with a balanced, organic fertilizer. Removing spent flowers (deadheading) promotes a longer flowering period. Marigolds often self-seed so they can reappear the next year. They are also relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but can occasionally be attacked by aphids.
