Origin:
Hyacinths belong to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and originally come from the eastern Mediterranean, particularly from the region from Anatolia to Iran and Turkmenistan.
Growth:
Hyacinths are perennial, herbaceous plants that grow from bulbs. They reach a height of 20 to 30 cm. The plants have erect, fleshy stems densely covered with fragrant flowers.
Leaves:
The leaves of hyacinths are long, narrow, strap-shaped and shiny green. They grow in a basal rosette and partially envelop the flower stem.
Blossom:
Hyacinth flowers are highly fragrant and come in a variety of colors including blue, purple, pink, red, white, yellow and orange. The flowers are tubular and arranged in dense clusters along the flower stem. The flowering period is in spring, typically March to April.
Location:
Hyacinths prefer a sunny to partially shaded location. They thrive best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. The soil should be well drained as bulbs can easily rot in waterlogged soil.
Care:
Hyacinths are relatively easy to care for. The bulbs should be planted in the ground in autumn, about 10-15 cm deep. During the growth and flowering period, hyacinths require regular watering to maintain soil moisture, but waterlogging should be avoided. After flowering, the flower stalks should be removed to direct the plant's energy into bulb regression. The leaves should be left until they yellow and die on their own to recycle nutrients back into the bulb. Light fertilization in spring can support growth. The bulbs can remain in the ground for years, but should be dug up and divided every few years to avoid overcrowding.
