Origin:
Gladiolus (Gladiolus) is native to South Africa and parts of Africa as well as Europe and the Mediterranean. They belong to the iris family (Iridaceae).
Growth:
Gladioli have upright stems that can reach a height of 30 cm to over 150 cm, depending on the variety and species. They grow from bulbs that need to be replanted annually.
Leaves:
The leaves of gladioli are lanceolate and form a basal rosette at the base. They are often elongated and have parallel veins.
Blossom:
Gladioli produce long, slender inflorescences consisting of many individual flowers in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, pink, orange, white and purple. The flowering time varies depending on the variety and location, but is often in summer.
Location:
Gladioli prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They thrive best in well-drained soil and require regular watering, especially during the growing and flowering seasons.
Care:
Gladioli require regular care, including regular watering and fertilizing. Wilted inflorescences should be removed regularly to encourage the formation of new buds. After flowering, the stems can be cut back and the bulbs should be dug up in the fall and stored for replanting next spring.
