Origin:
Echinacea is native to North America, primarily the central and eastern regions of the United States.
Growth:
Echinacea (coneflower) has an upright habit and forms dense bushes. Depending on the variety, the plants can reach a height of 30 cm to over 120 cm.
Leaves:
The leaves of Echinacea are lanceolate and can be gray-green in color, depending on the species and variety. They form an attractive base for the pretty flowers.
Blossom:
Echinacea produces showy flowers with cone-shaped centers and radiating petals. The flowers come in a variety of colors including pink, white, orange, yellow and red. The flowering period usually extends from summer to autumn.
Location:
Echinacea prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil. The plants are relatively drought tolerant and can thrive in a variety of soil types as long as the soil is not too wet.
Care:
Echinacea requires little care. The plants should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods, but they are relatively drought tolerant. Wilted inflorescences should be removed to encourage new buds to form, and in the fall the stems can be cut back to prepare the plant for winter. Echinacea can reproduce by self-seeding, so it is important to remove spent inflorescences to prevent uncontrolled spread.
