Origin:
Cymbidium orchids (boat orchids) are native to temperate regions of Asia, particularly China, India and Japan.
Growth:
Cymbidium orchids have an upright, crested habit with long, narrow leaves that are often band-shaped. Plants can reach a considerable size, usually between 30cm and 90cm, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Leaves:
The leaves of Cymbidium are mostly lanceolate and can be various shades of green depending on the variety and environment. They grow in dense rosettes along the plant.
Blossom:
Cymbidium orchids produce showy inflorescences with multiple flowers in a variety of colors including white, yellow, pink, orange, green and purple. The flowering time varies depending on the variety and location, but is usually in winter or spring.
Location:
Cymbidium orchids prefer a partially shaded to sunny location with well-drained soil. They require adequate light to bloom well, but direct sunlight should be avoided as it can cause burns. They grow well in cooler climates and can be kept outdoors in summer but should be protected from frost.
Care:
Cymbidium orchids require regular watering, but waterlogging should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. High humidity is important, especially during the growth and flowering periods. Regular fertilization with a balanced orchid fertilizer promotes healthy growth and flower formation. Wilted inflorescences should be removed to encourage new buds to form, and plants can be repotted as needed, usually every few years.
