Origin:
The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is native to Europe, but is also found in parts of North Africa and Asia. It is an annual plant and belongs to the Asteraceae family.
Growth:
The cornflower grows upright and reaches a height of around 30 to 60 centimeters. It grows thin stems and forms loose clusters of leaves and flowers.
Leaves:
The leaves of the cornflower are narrow and lanceolate with jagged edges. They are usually gray-green and grow alternately on the stem.
Blossom:
The flowers of the cornflower are the most distinctive feature of the plant. They are bright blue with a grainy, textured appearance. They appear in dense flower heads at the tips of the stems and bloom from spring to summer.
Location:
The cornflower prefers sunny locations with well-drained soil. It is a relatively undemanding plant and can also thrive in poor soil.
Care:
The cornflower requires little care. It requires moderate watering and tolerates drought well. Waterlogging should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. Wilted inflorescences should be removed to encourage new flowers to form. The seeds can be collected in the fall and resown the next year to propagate the plants.
