Origin:
Carnations (Dianthus) are native to Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. They have been cultivated for centuries and are popular both in gardens and as cut flowers.
Growth:
Cloves have a compact, bushy habit and usually reach a height of 20 to 70 centimeters, depending on the variety. They develop many branched stems surrounded by narrow leaves.
Leaves:
The leaves of the cloves are narrow and elongated with a blue-green hue. They grow in opposite pairs along the stems and form a dense foliage crown.
Blossom:
Carnation flowers are known for their variety of colors, including white, pink, red, purple and yellow. They have a distinctive serrated corolla and a sweet, spicy scent that makes them popular cut flowers.
Location:
Carnations prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They are relatively undemanding and thrive in most soil types as long as they are well drained. They are also tolerant of dry conditions and do well in rock gardens or borders.
Care:
Carnations require regular watering, especially during dry periods, to ensure uniform growth and abundant flowering. Withered flowers should be removed regularly to encourage new flowers to form. Occasional pruning after flowering can promote growth and keep the plant more compact.
