Origin:
The bearded carnation (Dianthus barbatus) is native to Europe and also occurs in parts of Asia.
Growth:
Beards are perennial plants that usually reach a height of around 30 to 60 centimeters. They have an upright habit and form dense bushes with narrow, linear leaves.
Leaves:
The leaves of bearded carnation are narrow and linear with a gray-green color. They grow opposite each other along the stems.
Flowers:
The flowers of the bearded carnation are characteristic for their dense, round flower heads, which consist of numerous small flowers. They can come in a variety of colors such as red, pink, white and purple and often have a pleasant scent.
Location:
Bearded carnations prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They thrive in temperate climates and can be grown in the garden as well as in containers or beds.
Care:
Beards require regular watering, especially during dry periods, but they do not tolerate waterlogging. They should also be fertilized regularly to promote healthy growth and profuse flowering. Withered flowers should be removed regularly to extend the flowering period. In spring, the plants can be cut back to encourage the growth of new flowers.
