Origin:

Astilbe, also known as Astilbe, belongs to the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae) and comes from the temperate regions of Asia and North America. It grows naturally in moist forests and along stream banks.

Growth:

Astilbes are perennial, herbaceous plants with an upright habit. Depending on the species and variety, they can reach a height of 30 cm to 1.5 meters. The plants form dense clumps and are known for their elegant, feathery inflorescences.

Leaves:

The leaves of the astilbe are pinnate, dark green and often shiny. They have a serrated or serrated leaf edge and can have a bronze or reddish color, especially on younger leaves or new growth in spring.

Blossom:

Astilbes bloom in summer, usually June to August. Its inflorescences are pyramidal or panicle-shaped and consist of numerous small flowers. Flower colors vary depending on the variety and include white, pink, red and purple. The inflorescences are not only attractive, but also long-lasting and make good cut flowers.

Location:

Astilbes prefer semi-shady to shady locations. They thrive best in moist, humus-rich and well-drained soil. They can also grow in full sun, but then require an adequate supply of water. A location with consistent moisture is ideal as the plants tolerate drought poorly.

Care:

Astilbes are relatively easy to care for as long as their basic needs are met. They require regular watering, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist. A mulch layer of organic material helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Astilbes benefit from an annual application of compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring. After flowering, the spent inflorescences should be cut back to keep the plant clean and healthy. It may be necessary to divide the clumps every few years in order to rejuvenate the plant and promote flowering.
