Origin:

Amaryllis comes from the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, especially Brazil.

Growth:

Amaryllis grows from a bulb and forms long, upright stems that usually reach between 30 and 60 centimeters in height. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate and can grow up to 50 centimeters long.

Leaves:

The leaves are shiny and dark green in color. They grow in clumps at the base of the plant.

Flowering:

Amaryllis (Amaryllis spp.) produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers in winter or spring in a variety of colors including red, pink, white, orange and even striped or bicolor.

Location:

Amaryllis prefers a sunny location, but can also grow in partial shade. It should be protected from strong winds. Indoors, it does well in a well-lit area.

Care:

Amaryllis requires regular watering during the growing season, but waterlogging should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. After the flowering period, the stems can be cut off and the plant should be kept in a cooler place to allow for a dormant period. During this time there is less watering. After a few weeks, the amaryllis can be moved back to a sunny location and watering increased to encourage growth and flowering.
