Origin:
Poppy (Papaver), part of the Papaveraceae family, is native to various parts of the world, particularly Europe, Asia and North America.
Growth:
Poppy plants vary greatly in size and shape. Some species, such as the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), are annual and can grow up to 1 meter tall, while others are perennial and grow shorter.
Leaves:
Poppy leaves are usually hairy and can have a variety of shapes, from serrated to lobed. They are often blue-green in color and grow in basal rosettes.
Blossom:
The distinctive flowers of poppies are large and showy, with thin petals and a prominent fruit cluster in the center. The flowers can come in a variety of colors including red, orange, pink, purple and white.
Location:
Poppy prefers sunny locations with well-drained soil. They thrive best in loose, well-drained soil and are relatively undemanding.
Care:
Poppy is a relatively easy plant to care for. It requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, but waterlogging should be avoided as it can lead to root rot. The seeds can be sown in the fall and the plants require little additional care. Wilted flowers can be removed to encourage new blooms to form.
