Gerbera

Origin:
Gerberas (Gerbera jamesonii) originally come from the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and South America. They were discovered in the 19th century and have since become popular around the world for their attractive flowers.

Growth:
Gerberas have an upright habit with long, hairy stems that bear individual flower heads. Depending on the variety, the inflorescences can reach a height of 20 to 60 centimeters.

Leaves:
Gerbera leaves are dark green, shiny and often lobed or serrated. They grow in a basal rosette and form an attractive background for the large flowers.

Blossoms:
The gerbera is known for its showy flowers, which feature large, bright colors and a distinctive basket shape. With a center of small tubular flowers and outer petals in various vibrant colors such as red, yellow, orange and pink, it fascinates every observer. These sturdy blooms last a long time, whether as part of an arrangement or in the garden.

Location:
Gerberas prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They grow best in warm, frost-free climates. In areas with cold winters they can be grown as houseplants but should be protected from frost.

Care:
Gerberas require regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist. Waterlogging should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. Withered flowers should be removed regularly to encourage new flowers to form. Fertilizing occasionally with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season can support growth and flower production.
