History of the Aarau Cantonal Hospital
The Aarau Cantonal Hospital was founded in 1887 and when it opened it consisted of 9 pavilions and barracks. There were 190 beds for children and adults and 40 beds for women giving birth. The Aarau Cantonal Hospital, as the cantonal hospital was called at the time, had 43 employees, including 4 doctors, 1 administrator, 3 clergy, 17 nurses, 18 service staff and cared for 1,484 patients. The founder and first director was Heinrich Bircher. The previous hospital of the KSA was housed in the old premises of the Königsfelden monastery, which was poorly suited for it. Bircher had campaigned for the Grand Council to decide to build a new hospital on March 22, 1882. The KSA has produced numerous pioneering achievements. After the first operating room was built in 1892, the Aarau Cantonal Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the world to operate an X-ray system as early as 1896, six months after the discovery of X-rays.
In 1975, the large central building (House 1) was opened with six operating rooms, a central laboratory, an intensive care unit and an eight-story high-rise with 240 beds. In a second stage, the new supply operations with a kitchen, central warehouse, hospital pharmacy, workshops and supply channels were put into operation in 1982. For a further 100 million, in 1992 House 1 received a white, box-like extension on its east and west sides, into which other areas relevant to collaboration were incorporated. All other areas had to remain in the houses scattered around the central building.
Other new buildings include House 2a, which was put into operation in 1988, and House 7, which opened in 1997 and was the first acute hospital in Switzerland where every patient bed is located directly next to a window.
