Origin:
Strelicias, also known as bird of paradise flowers, come from southern Africa. They belong to the Strelitzia family (Strelitziaceae) and are particularly valued for their exotic, showy flowers.
Growth:
Strelicias are perennial, evergreen plants. They grow as strong, upright perennials 1 to 2 meters tall, although some species can grow larger. The plants form dense clumps and have rhizomatous roots.
Leaves:
The leaves of the strelicia are large, oblong-oval and leathery. They are dark green and can grow up to 1.5 meters long. The leaves are arranged in a fan-like manner and grow from a common base.
Blossom:
The flowers of the strelicia are spectacular and reminiscent of the head shape of a bird of paradise, hence the name bird of paradise flower. They consist of bright orange and blue petals emerging from a sword-shaped bract (spatha). The flowering period often extends over several months, mainly in late winter to early spring.
Location:
Strelizia prefer a sunny to partially shaded location. They thrive in well-drained, humus-rich soil. In temperate climates they can be grown outdoors, while in colder regions they are better kept as container plants and require protection in winter.
Care:
Strelicias are relatively easy to care for. They require regular watering, especially during the growing season, but the soil should not be too wet to avoid root rot. During the flowering period, regular fertilization with a balanced fertilizer can promote flower formation. Strelicias should be cultivated in larger containers to provide enough space for their root growth. In winter they should be kept in a cool but frost-free place. Occasional pruning of dried leaves and flower stalks will help keep the plant healthy and improve its appearance.
