Providence Hospital

The Hospital of Providence was founded in 1859 by the Congregation of the Hospitallers of Besançon. It owes its name to the nuns' unshakable trust in the origin of the appointment in divine providence.

In 1976 the Hospitallers were asked for help. The hospital's structures are being adapted to the ever-increasing technical requirements. The hospital's president is now a layperson and management is entrusted to a director who can work closely with the president, the executive committee, the chief physician and the matron.

The growth and development of Providence Hospital continued uninterrupted, with an expansion and modernization of its premises in 1998. From then on, the old buildings were transferred to the administration as well as the physiotherapy department, the ophthalmology center and medical offices. The new wing houses the patient rooms and the operating room using state-of-the-art technology. At the same time, the new dialysis department opens its doors and is now one of the three largest hemodialysis centers in Switzerland. March 28, 2001 symbolizes the official inauguration of a Providence Hospital, rebuilt, renovated and celebrated by the authorities of the time. Providence Hospital also has a polyclinic that receives patients 6/7 days. It is registered on the list of cantonal hospitals, employs 235 people and can count on almost a hundred licensed doctors.

On March 1, 2013, the Hôpital de la Providence joined the Swiss Medical Network, the second largest group of clinics in Switzerland. At the end of June 2014, after 203 years of presence, the sisters left the Providence Hospital by decision of their superior. This is the 23rd community to close for lack of vocation.
